Jewellery Valuation & Appraisals
Whether you need a valuation for insurance, probate or sale, Coppins’ in-house valuer provides professional jewellery valuations for most items. Every piece is individually examined and documented, creating a detailed record of its characteristics and value.
Our valuations include:
- A detailed description of each item, including gemstone measurements, colour and clarity, precious metal, weight and hallmarks
- An appropriate valuation for insurance, probate or sale, depending on the purpose of the valuation
- A colour photograph of each piece
- Explanatory notes and condition reports where appropriate
- Full insurance cover whilst your jewellery remains in our care
We also offer free verbal valuations over the counter for customers seeking an informal indication of an item’s value. These are not suitable for insurance, probate or other legal purposes.
Some items, including watches, specialist pieces or collections where required by an insurer, may be referred to an IRV-registered valuation company. We will always discuss the available options with you before proceeding.
Jewellery Cleaning
We believe it is important to clean jewellery regularly, and we recommend annual cleaning for pieces worn often to help keep them in their best condition.
Bringing your jewellery to our in-house workshop for cleaning also allows our team to examine it carefully with a jeweller’s loupe or under the microscope, checking for signs of wear and advising on any repairs that may be needed. Think of professional cleaning as planned preventative maintenance rather than simply a clean and polish.
Each piece is cleaned using specialist equipment, which may include ultrasonic cleaning, steam cleaning, machine polishing or hand polishing in our dedicated polishing room, depending on what is most suitable for the item.
Cleaning is priced per piece, so please get in touch to discuss your requirements.
Gemstone Sourcing
We have been collecting gemstones for more than 40 years, building a remarkable library of fine and unusual stones. From richly coloured gems to rare cuts and distinctive one-offs, our collection offers plenty to discover, whether you already have something special in mind or would simply like to explore what inspires you.
Alongside our in-store collection, we also work closely with trusted suppliers from around the world. This allows us to source exceptional gemstones on request, including harder-to-find specimens, unusual colours and stones with particular natural beauty, character or inclusions.
Every stone we source is chosen with care and attention to detail, and we’re here to guide you through the choices, explain what makes each gem unique, and help you find the one that speaks to you.
If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, or would like to start with the stone and build your design from there, get in touch.
Precious Metal Recycling
We purchase unwanted, out-of-fashion, broken, scrap or seldom-worn silver, gold, platinum and palladium jewellery. These precious metals can be melted in our on-site workshop and refined for reuse within our bespoke jewellery collections, allowing existing materials to be repurposed. This helps reduce the need for newly mined material in our future pieces.
Note: Customers wishing to sell precious metals must be 18 years of age or older, and valid photographic identification is required.
Pearl & Bead Re-threading
Regular restringing is an important part of caring for pearl and beaded jewellery, and our workshop offers a full restringing service for both modern and inherited pieces. We generally recommend annual restringing for items worn every day, and for older or inherited jewellery where the condition of the silk is unknown, renewing the string provides added security and peace of mind.
As part of the process, each pearl or bead is individually cleaned before being restrung on fresh silk or cord. Our team takes care to maintain the original order of the pearls or beads, unless you request a redesign.
We can also add knots between each pearl or bead. Knotting helps to reduce wear from rubbing and, most importantly, ensures that if the string ever breaks, only one pearl or bead will come loose rather than the entire row.
If you’re unsure whether your piece needs restringing, we’re always happy to take a look and advise.
Silver Holloware Repair & Restoration
Our talented silversmiths offer a full repair and restoration service for silver holloware, including items such as hip flasks, candelabra, candlesticks and other treasured pieces.
Using a combination of traditional silversmithing techniques and modern equipment, they can address dents, breaks, structural issues and general wear, restoring your silver items to their best condition.
If you have a silver item in need of skilled care, we’re always happy to take a look and advise.
Watch Batteries & Strap Adjustments
We can replace batteries and carry out strap adjustments for all makes and models of watches. So whether your timepiece has stopped ticking, your leather strap needs replacing, or your bracelet needs a few links removed, we’re here to help.
Note: Most minor watch repairs can be completed while you wait, although during busy periods or for more time-consuming work, we may ask you to leave your watch with us.
Watch Battery Replacement Disclaimer
When a watch is brought to us for a battery replacement, it will be treated as non-functional at the point of intake unless it is clearly running at that time. Battery replacement is a limited service, and we do not carry out diagnostic checks or movement repairs.
Many watches stop due to issues unrelated to the battery, such as movement wear, water ingress, electronic faults or lack of regular servicing. If a watch does not restart after a new battery has been fitted, this indicates an existing fault within the movement rather than a problem caused by the battery replacement.
While we take care when handling every watch, we cannot accept liability for pre-existing damage or faults that become apparent during or after the battery replacement.
Ring Removal
If your ring has become too tight to take off, our workshop offers a safe ring-removal service using specialised tools designed to keep your finger safe and minimise any impact on your jewellery.
There is no charge for our ring-removal service.
After removal, you can take your jewellery away or leave it with us for resizing. We recommend waiting a week or two for your finger to return to its normal size before we remeasure it. Once it has settled, we can quote to repair and resize the ring so it fits comfortably again.
